Rediscovery of the Stalked Jellyfish

The stalked jellyfish Depastrum cyathiforme, last seen in 1976 in northern France, was found by a holidaymaker exploring rock pools in South Uist. Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd. (CMAL) has initiated a Small Vessel Replacement Programme aimed at modernizing the ferry fleet serving the Western Isles. The first phase involves the construction of seven new vessels to replace aging ferries on various routes, including Colintraive–Rhubodach and Sconser–Raasay. These new vessels are expected to be more environmentally friendly and meet higher regulatory standards. The procurement process began in July 2024, with a contract awarded to Remontowa Shipbuilding of Gdańsk, Poland, in March 2025. The first vessel is anticipated to be delivered by 2027 .

Western Isles Hospital in Stornoway has recently achieved a significant milestone by performing its first total wrist replacement surgery. This advancement marks a step forward in delivering advanced hand and wrist surgery to the island’s residents.
